Back 2 Basics: Using Your Checklist To Audit Your Wardrobe

This blog is part of a series inspired by our “Basics Checklist: The 33 Wardrobe Items You MUST Own”.  Get in on the fun and download your free copy.

Alright fashion friends; we’ve explained WHAT the Basics Checklist is, and we’ve told you WHY you should be using it. Now it’s time to get down and dirty and show you HOW to work your checklist.

We know that auditing your closet is an important task for you – (why else would you have downloaded our Basics Checklist?!) – but even with the right tools and mindset, it can still seem like a daunting one. But it doesn’t have to be! We’ve laid out 3 easy steps to help get you started.

Step 1:  Get Your Head in the Game!  You are about to embark on a fun – yes, FUN! – project that is going to take some time, thought, and energy.  Make sure you set aside a good amount of time to dedicate to this process.  We suggest scheduling a 2 hour date with your closet.  Bring in some water and snacks, put on your favorite Spotify station, and get ready to get intimate with your clothing!

But before you take the plunge, we suggest taking a moment to reflect on your personal style, and the message you want to send the world with your clothing.  You will need to look at your clothing through the eyes of the person you are RIGHT NOW.  Not the girl of your past, or a version of you that is 10 pounds lighter, but the WOMAN of TODAY!  Don’t be afraid to toss clothing that no longer suits you.

In fact, before we dive into the next step, take a moment to assess all of the clothing that you have accumulated over the years.   Glance through your closet & drawers, and take out any article of clothing that you haven’t worn in 2+ years (not including special occasion garments).  Most likely, these items no longer reflect your personal style, because we always find a way to wear things we love!

Immediately put the clothes that no longer fit you (by way of size or style) into a donation pile.  This simple exercise will immediately clear the way for better things to come!

Step 2:  Identify your Best Basics.  There’s an excellent chance you already have a lot of great Basics in your closet.  Let’s start by identifying those pieces that you want to keep as the foundation of your wardrobe.

Working in the current season is a great place to start because this season’s clothes are likely the most accessible and visible pieces in your closet.  Get out your Basics Checklist, reviewing the tips if you need to, and pull out those Basics that fit the bill!  Set these aside and check them off your checklist.

Note:  If you come across a great Basic that you love, but it’s damaged or ill-fitting, make a note on your Checklist about replacing it in the near future.  Check out our blog with tips for replacing your favorite basics.

If you downloaded our guide, you know that we have created a special wardrobe season called, “Anytime”.  These are the Basics that you can truly wear year-round because the color, fabric, and cut is appropriate for all seasons.  Use the tips in our guide to take a closer look at your traditional seasonal wardrobe and determine which pieces should be designated as “Anytime”.  These pieces should hang in your closet year-round and co-mingle with your current season’s wardrobe.

Timeout!  Right now you should have 3 working piles:

1. Donation Pile

2. This Season’s Best Basics

3. Anytime Best Basics

If you’re still motivated & energized, start auditing next season’s wardrobe!   Pull out those clothes that have been stowed away for months and take a look at them with fresh eyes.  Determine which pieces should be added to the donation pile, and which ones you’ll be ready to wear again when the seasons rolls around.  Are there any that may be better off designated as an “Anytime” Basic?  If so, go ahead and add it to your closet now and play around with ways to incorporate it into this season.

*Extra credit tip
Take pictures of your Basics to reference when you go shopping to fill in the gaps. Take note of the colors, textures, and patterns you have to ensure you don’t end up with duplicates. Apps like My Fashion Closet for iPhone and MyDressing for Andriod will help you capture and catalog your clothes!

Step 3: Organize. Once you’ve identified your best Anytime and current season Basics, put them back in the closet, arranged for easy viewing & access.  We recommend co-mingling your Anytime Basics with your current season – so go ahead and group your pieces together as you normally would (skirts, pants, blouses, t-shirt, etc.).

Now, take your next season’s items and store them away so they don’t clutter the view, and have a system for organizing your shoes and accessories.

And TA-DA, your closet is audited!  See, that wasn’t so bad.

We hope you successfully identified some great Basics that you can work with this season and next. Now, review your completed Checklist to see what gaps you need to fill (or remind yourself of favorite basics that need to be replaced) and start shopping accordingly.  And don’t forget to pick up some Fling for modern flair!

You may be asking, “What do I do with my trendier pieces of clothing, or those that don’t really fit in the Basics category?”

Check back in two weeks for our next installment of the Back 2 Basics series to find out!
