Layering For The Summer

Layering your clothes is a great way to create new looks and get the most out of your wardrobe.  Multiple layers adds interesting colors, patterns, and textures to your look.  In the Fall it’s easy to layer a blazer over your outfit to dress it up, or top it off with a chunky sweater to add some texture.   But layering in the summer months can can prove to be challenging.

If you live in the South (like I do) you know that summer time is not very conducive to wearing more than one layer.  And with our “summer” season lasting at least 4 months, that’s a good chunk of the year where layering is practically a dirty word.  So, how do you add interesting layers to your outfits without giving yourself heatstroke?

Vests - layering post

A lightweight vest can take the place of a cardigan or blazer that you would normally add to an outfit. You can go with something more structured like a denim vest, or embrace the summery boho trend with a fringed scarf vest. The styling possibilities are endless!

Jewelry - layered post v2

There are so many ways to use jewelry to change the look and feel of an outfit.  A piece of jewelry can take your look from casual to dressy, artful to sophisticated, or bold to understated in an instant.   Check out these tips and see what  jewelry you should consider adding to your collection to change things up:

1. Necklaces:  With all of the different styles, textures, lengths, and colors, the possibilites are endless! You can layer a few different lengths and colors together, or go for one big statement necklace in a bold color. Try a few different textures with your outfit as well. Mixing metals, beads, and chain types can all add texture and style to your outfit without adding another bulky layer.

2. Bracelets:  Let’s have an arm party! Mixing together a variety of bangles in different colors and textures gives any outfit a stylish kick in the pants. If you’d rather stick to just one or two bracelets, a bold cuff is simple and elegant. Or if color is more your style,  big colorful bracelets in silk are perfect for summer!

3. Rings: Your fingers deserve some attention as well! A fun cocktail ring is a great addition to your look, and adds an element of texture without adding more layers to your clothing. You could also try a popular trend right now, and layer on a few rings at your knuckle. Bling is always in style.

4. Earrings:  There are a ton of great options for earrings out there as well. Earrings bring the focus up to your face, and come in a huge variety of styles, shapes, and colors. If you want a simple and elegant look, some studs with a beautiful stone will keep your look understated and classy. For a more vibrant look, try a longer chandelier style with some sparkle. Or just go crazy and wear some feathers or miniature pineapples!

belts - layering postKBJ mirror belt

A good belt can change the entire feel of an outfit and create a more chic silhouette. There are a huge variety of styles from a sleek gold mirror belt to a classic slim leather belt. You can even try out a wider obi belt or a fun patterned one!  This summer rompers and jumpsuits are a huge trend, and layering in a belt is a great way to change up the look.

A lightweight summer scarf is a must for layering in the summer!  If you live in a warm climate, chances are every place you go (movie theater, office, etc) is going to be blasting the AC to combat the heat. If can actually get pretty chilly in there. A cute summer scarf with a great pattern and color not only brings some texture to your look, but it also will ward off the chills in those cold indoor places.
