Style Talk With A Fling Fashionista – Laurel Kinney

In our Style Talk series, we  talk to some of our favorite style bloggers about their style, their shopping habits, their favorite trends, and their awesome blogs! This month, we’re so excited to be featuring Laurel Kinney! A personal stylist and fashion blogger in Austin, TX, Laurel has made quite a name for herself helping women (and men!) find their best style. We’re so excited to have her share some of her style secrets!

When did you first fall in love with fashion? And when did you begin your blog?
For as long as I can remember I have been interested in expressing myself through fashion. I used to make my own puffy paint t-shirts in elementary school, embroider my own jeans in middle school, and make my own patchwork jeans in high school (it was the 90s, ok??)
I began my first blog, Trophy Boutique, in 2010, and my new blog, on in 2014!

What are you wearing RIGHT NOW???
Too many layers! High-waisted jeans, a cropped linen t-shirt with a cardigan, blazer, scarf, and boots.

What’s your favorite go-to outfit and why?
I have to be pretty comfortable on the job (I am either sorting closets, styling outfits, or shopping with clients every day) so I tend to stick to a uniform of some kind of denim, blouse, blazer combo.

What trend(s) are you digging right now?
I was incredibly resistant to the crop-top trend, but I have discovered that layering longer tops underneath looks cool without being actually cold 🙂 I also recently found some amazing culottes I’m certain will be worn all spring! I’m into weird pants.

What are your top 3 go-to stores (brick and mortar or online) and how often do you shop?
I love KickPleat, MOSS, and Zara for myself, and Nordstrom, Anthropologie, and Madewell for my clients.

Currently, what is your favorite piece in your closet?
Oh man…probably my Helmut Lang cropped blazer I got on super sale at Last Call. It makes me feel like a sexy boss lady!

Who is your style icon?
I have a soft spot for Leandra Medine who uses humor in her way of dress, and Olivia Palermo’s street style is a guilty pleasure.

What tips would you give our readers for discovering their personal style?
Use Pinterest to collect outfits and images you love, think about what themes you see, and find a way to translate this into your own life. If you have no idea where to start, think about hiring a personal stylist to help you see the potential in your current and future wardrobe!

Tell us 3 random facts about you!
I am totally devoted to my dog, Penny Kinney who is a mini dachshund mix and is kind of internet famous (#pennykinney on Instagram)
I am an oil painter who averages about one painting every five years
I have seen Morrissey live in concert about 8 times.

Thank you for sharing your style secrets with us, Laurel! We completely agree, you are a #SexyBossLady. You can find Laurel at her site,, as well as on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram – her name is @laurel_kinney. Check back next month for more style talk with our favorite Fling Fashionistas!
