Summer style is a double-edged sword. On one hand, you want to look your best for those days at the beach, weekend trips, and fun summer outside festivals and activities. But on the other hand…. IT’S SO HOT!! Staying stylish in the heat is not always easy, especially if you work in a professional setting where you are still expected to look nice every single day and cannot resort to wearing shorts and flip flops. We have a few style tips to help you look stylish and still stay (relatively) cool.*
*Unless you are in the south. If you are in the south, we’re sorry; you are probably just going to be hot.
Tip #1: Layer with care
Maybe there are places where you can wear a light summer sweater or short-sleeved blazer in July & August; but most places it’s pretty warm. Instead of your typical heavy pieces, try super light layers like open vests, kimonos, or a lightweight scarf. The airy fabric won’t hold in the heat, and you can still add some texture and dimension to your look.
Tip #2: Check the fabric
It’s no secret that some fabrics just feel better than others. Natural fabrics like cotton and linen breathe better and hold in less body heat than synthetic fabrics like polyester and rayon. If you are doing some summer shopping, be sure to check the tag and see what the item is made of. Even a cotton/synthetic blend will be lighter than 100% synthetic item.
Tip #3: Say it with accessories
Summer time is all about simple style; whatever looks good and keeps you cool. When looking for a way to punch up a simple summer sheath dress, or a basic tank top/denim shorts look, opt for bold accessories instead of clothing layers. A bright necklace or bracelet, a cool belt, or a stand out purse will add interest to your outfit without adding any extra fabric.
Tip #4: Wear sunscreeen!
Okay, this isn’t technically a style tip, but it is super important. Wear sunscreen everyday!! It doesn’t matter if you work in an office building, or if your going out shopping, or heading to the pool. Put some sunscreen (on your face especially) on every single day. Trust us, your skin will thank you!
