Style vs. Trend

There are a lot of misconceptions floating around about what it means to be trendy. Perhaps it’s because of pictures like this…..

too many trends

So many trends in one outfit!

Many people associate trends with overly-accessorized outfits, teenagers, and a general lack of style. But really, nothing could be further from the truth!

What is a trend?  A trend is an item of clothing, accessory, or even a color that has gained popularity due to use in fashion shows. For example, let’s say a lot of designers use mini skirts in their runway shows for spring/summer. Those styles will be reproduced for mass apparel during the season and lots of people will buy and wear them. It might stay popular for just one season, or it can last for 3 or 4 seasons. But it’s popularity will eventually decline, and it will be replaced by the next trendy item.

What is a style?  Style usually refers to a broader definition of a set of  items. For example, someone could consider their style to be “preppy” because they wear a lot of polo shirts, cashmere sweaters, A-line skirts, and boat shoes. Or someone could have a retro style if they favor t-strap high heels, full skirted dresses, and pearl necklaces.

So, the looming question is, can you have your own style and be in trend?  Absolutely!  The two are not mutually exclusive.  Just because you have a style that you prefer does not mean that you can’t include trends in your wardrobe. And just because you prefer to wear the latest trends does not mean that you don’t have style.  Check out the pics below of some well-known styles that have incorporated current trends to modernize the feel of their outfit.

This gal has added current trends, (like those cute ankle boots!), to give her preppy style a modern update.

How can you tell this picture was taken in 2014 instead of 1954? First, the hemline is shorter than would be the norm in the 1950’s. Second, the model is sporting two more trends from this year: multiple bracelets and geometric (triangle) earrings in a vivid blue hue.

Nicole Richie is the ultimate example of a modern bohemian. While her style reflects the cool, laid-back vibe of the late 1960’s, her black geometric necklace and leather leggings are two hot trends of this era.

When you completely ignore trends and choose not to incorporate them into your wardrobe, what you are really doing is denying yourself the opportunity to explore and grow your style. No one’s style stays the same forever. We grow and evolve and find new things to wear that suit us. And part of that evolution is finding current trends and working them into our closets in a way that meshes with our style.

So go ahead and try that new trend! Your style will thank you for it.
