If there is one item that is a true wardrobe staple, it’s a great pair of jeans. They are worn in every season, come in several cuts, colors, and styles that flatter every single body type, and are sold at every price point. You can dress them up, dress them down, and most companies have a whole day once a week dedicated to them; it’s called Casual Friday.
So if jeans are so amazing and wonderful, why is it so hard to find a great pair of them? Like bathing suit shopping, denim shopping leaves many women frustrated, sad, and full of rage. No two brands fit the same, inventory is either skimpy or overwhelming, and wow do jeans really cost that much?
We feel your pain and we’ve heard your cries. Shopping for denim doesn’t have to be torture! Here are a few tips on making your denim shopping a little less awful, and a lot more successful.
1. Set aside a chunk of time. A common rookie mistake is thinking that this is a normal shopping trip; go in, walk around for an hour or two, find what you want, and leave. Finding great jeans requires a lot of trial and error, so give yourself plenty of time to visit lots of stores and try on different styles. If you try to denim shop in a short window of time, you’ll stress yourself out and end up going home with a pair of jeans you don’t really love.
2. Set a budget. The price range on denim is very wide. Some stores will sell you a pair of jeans for $20 (Old Navy), though the most common price is around $60-$80. Premium denim is in the $200 range. Before you even set foot in a store, decide on your budget, and what you want to get out of it. For example, if you have $150 you could get 2 pairs of jeans or spurge on a single premium denim purchase. Whatever you decide, DO NOT try on denim that is outside of your set budget. Have you ever seen the show, “Say Yes To The Dress”? There’s always a bride that tries on a dress that is thousands of dollars outside of her budget, then spends the rest of the show pouting over the Perfect Dress that got away. The Perfect Pair of jeans not only looks and fits great, but is also in your budget!
3. Bring a buddy. This is one trek you don’t want to make alone. Whether it’s a sibling, a friend, a significant other, or even your mom, bring along someone who will help keep your spirits up. Someone who won’t mind grabbing another size for you while you’re in the dressing room. And most importantly, someone who will be honest and keep you on track. Someone that you trust to tell you “yes, those are amazing!” or “no they make your butt disappear.”
4. Stay positive. There are a million styles/color/cuts of jeans out there. Some of them are going to make you look and feel like Brooke Shields in those old Calvin Klein ads. Others are going to make you look like you have a flat butt and stumpy legs. But that doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your body. No, your legs aren’t hideous, your butt isn’t huge, and you don’t need to lose 3 pounds. You look amazing; you just have to find the right jeans to showcase it!
Now go forth and jean shop!
